    Dinosaur Jr.

    Amherst, Massachusetts, USA·1984–1997, 2005–present

J Mascis's guitar was a wall of fuzz and feedback that somehow also contained some of the most beautiful melodies in indie rock. His slacker mumble and Lou Barlow's bass created a dynamic that was both abrasive and deeply melodic, like a shoegaze band raised on Neil Young and Black Sabbath. The volume was the point, but so were the songs underneath it.

Their SST-era records defined the indie rock guitar sound of the late eighties. Where You Been brought them to a wider audience in the nineties. The 2005 reunion of the original lineup produced albums as strong as anything in their catalog, proving that Mascis's ear for melody hadn't dulled.

    Key Albums

    1987You're Living All Over Me

The noise-pop masterpiece. 'Little Fury Things' and 'In a Jar' buried hooks under avalanches of guitar.

    1988Bug

More focused and accessible, with 'Freak Scene' as their signature song.

    1993Where You Been

The major-label polished version of their sound, surprisingly effective.

    Why They Matter

Dinosaur Jr. proved that extreme volume and pop melody were not just compatible but complementary. Mascis's guitar tone and songwriting influenced everyone from My Bloody Valentine to Nirvana to modern shoegaze revivalists.
