    Dio

    Cortland, New York, USA·1982–2010

Ronnie James Dio had already fronted Rainbow and Black Sabbath before launching his solo band, and his voice, a massive operatic instrument, could fill arenas without a microphone, was the most powerful in heavy metal. He popularized the devil horns hand gesture that became metal's universal symbol, and his lyrics drew from medieval fantasy and mythology with a conviction that lesser singers couldn't have pulled off.

Holy Diver is one of metal's most essential albums, its title track and 'Rainbow in the Dark' becoming instant classics. Dio maintained a remarkably consistent output across three decades, never chasing trends, never softening his approach. His death from stomach cancer in 2010 was mourned across the entire metal community.

    Key Albums

    1983Holy Diver

The masterpiece. The title track and 'Rainbow in the Dark' are metal gospel.

    1984The Last in Line

Nearly as strong as Holy Diver, with the epic title track.

    1985Sacred Heart

Slightly more commercial but still powerful Dio.

    Why They Matter

Dio's voice set the standard for power metal vocals, and his devil horns gesture became the universal symbol of heavy metal. His post-Sabbath career proved that a vocalist could carry an entire genre on the strength of their voice alone.
